ANTIULCER PROPERTY OF SOURSOP - LAXMANPHAL (Annona muricata)

ANTIULCER PROPERTIES OF SOURSOP - LAXMANPHAL (Annona muricata)

Annona muricata contains high concentrations of flavonoids, tannins, and phenolic acid, making it a strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and gastro-protective properties. A survey revealed that the leaves and bark of A. muricata are popularly used to make tea, used in the treatment of gastrointestinal problems such as gastritis, and poor digestion.

In a study carried out by (REF. 1), A. muricata has also been reported to improve gastric lesions. The hydroalcoholic extract of A. muricata leaves to treat ulcers in absolute and acidified methanol or indomethacin-induced lesions in rats showed that the extract reduced the ulceration process by activating prostaglandin synthesis as a gastro-protector and suppressed aggressive factors of the gastric mucosa.

Another study carried out by (REF. 2)  on A. muricata ethyl acetate extract showed antiulcer activity via ROS-scavenging and gastric wall damage protection in rats with ethanol-induced gastric injury.

The minimum inhibitory concentration of A. muricata leaf extract against H. pylori is 20 mg/ml. (REF. 3)

A. muricata also inhibited inflammatory mediators such as 1L-1β, TNF-a, and IL-6 (REF. 4)

DEFECTIVE APOPTOSIS - A CANCER CELLS DEVELOPING PROCESS

A NORMAL APOPTOSIS PROCESS APOPTOSIS Apoptosis is a Greek word, meaning to drop off. This term is more relevantly used at the cellular level as the 'cell death' on receiving a certain stimulus. Apoptosis is an important phenomenon that plays an important role in the pathogenesis of many diseases. Low or high rates of Apoptosis are culprits in some degenerative diseases. Cancer is a cellular condition where the rate of Apoptosis is less, resulting in malignant cells that will not die, giving rise to a lump of cells, termed Cancer. In Cancer treatment, targeting Apoptosis in Cancer cells is an important aspect. Defective Apoptotic pathways play a crucial role in Carcinogenesis and can be tackled with targeted Apoptosis with the help of some nutraceutical products. Soursop fruits are rich in Acetogenins, which are known to be selectively toxic to Cancer cells.

ANTIMICROBIAL PROPERT OF SOURSOP

Soursop is appreciated for its high effectivity to fight against Cancer. Some studies reveal that Soursop contains antimicrobial properties as well. Antimicrobial property Soursop can combat various bacterial and parasitic infections. This effect is largely due to the presence of bioactive compounds like Acetogenins, Flavonoids, and Alkaloids in the Soursop fruit and leaves extract. These compounds destroy the integrity of microbial cell membranes and inhibit essential enzymes there by preventing the growth and proliferation of pathogen. The study indicates the Soursop fruit and leaves extracts are effective in treating infections caused by resistant strains making them a promising alternative to conventional antibiotics. Soursop shows antimicrobial efficacy was evaluated using the disc diffusion method against  Streptococcus mutans ,  Streptococcus mitis ,  Porphyromonas gingivalis ,  Prevotella intermedia , and  Candida albicans in laboratory con...

ANTI INFLAMMATORY PROPERTY OF SOURSOP

Due to significant side effects of steroid and non steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAID), there is an increasing interest in herbal remedies that have been in use for many years to minimize pain and inflammation. The great number of natural compounds work similarly to that of the NSAIDs. The mechanism of antinociception (reduced sensitivity to pain) has been shown to inhibit cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenases (LOX) through inflammatory mediators such as flavonoids present in the plant extract. The anti-inflammatory effects of Annona muricata are thus demonstrated to occur through suppression of inflammatory mediators. A. muricata produced dose-dependent and significant results, which were comparatively similar to the inhibition of inflammatory pain produced by morphine (96.08%) standard reference drug. The effect of the extract in this phase suggests that it may have an anti-inflammatory property. In conclusion, findings from the results of the studies showed th...
