SOURSOP TREE FRUITING

Soursop tree belongs to the Custard apple family, known as Annonaceae. The fruits are juicy, fleshy, and fibrous, giving the unique taste of Mango and Pineapple. It can be eaten fresh or it can be used to make popular products like Soursop juice, ice creams, custard, etc. The fruits and fruit products are popular with people for their tangy taste and exceptional health benefits. The fruits are believed to be helpful in treating Cancer. Soursop is, therefore, promoted as an Anticancer fruit which is helpful in alternative cancer treatment.

Soursop fruits appear on the tree after 3-5 years of its maturity. Fruits are harvested when they are fully grown. When fruits are allowed to mature on a tree, they become soft on ripening, they fall and crush.

The fruits are to be eaten within 5-6 days after harvesting to experience their appropriate taste. They soon turn soft and overripe then after. Interestingly, Soursop is not just a delicious fruit, is it well known for its medicinal properties. Soursop is a good source of Antioxidants. Soursop has potential antimicrobial properties.

Due to its high perishability, Soursop fruits are peeled off and its pulp is directly poured into a Bourneel’s Glass Jar in hygienic conditions, where pulp can be stored for up to 6 months. On opening, the pulp is to be utilised within a week. This unique Soursop jar improves the availability of the fruit to the longer period of time.

ANTI INFLAMMATORY PROPERTY OF SOURSOP

Due to significant side effects of steroid and non steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAID), there is an increasing interest in herbal remedies that have been in use for many years to minimize pain and inflammation. The great number of natural compounds work similarly to that of the NSAIDs. The mechanism of antinociception (reduced sensitivity to pain) has been shown to inhibit cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenases (LOX) through inflammatory mediators such as flavonoids present in the plant extract. The anti-inflammatory effects of Annona muricata are thus demonstrated to occur through suppression of inflammatory mediators. A. muricata produced dose-dependent and significant results, which were comparatively similar to the inhibition of inflammatory pain produced by morphine (96.08%) standard reference drug. The effect of the extract in this phase suggests that it may have an anti-inflammatory property. In conclusion, findings from the results of the studies showed th...

ANTIMICROBIAL PROPERT OF SOURSOP

Soursop is appreciated for its high effectivity to fight against Cancer. Some studies reveal that Soursop contains antimicrobial properties as well. Antimicrobial property Soursop can combat various bacterial and parasitic infections. This effect is largely due to the presence of bioactive compounds like Acetogenins, Flavonoids, and Alkaloids in the Soursop fruit and leaves extract. These compounds destroy the integrity of microbial cell membranes and inhibit essential enzymes there by preventing the growth and proliferation of pathogen. The study indicates the Soursop fruit and leaves extracts are effective in treating infections caused by resistant strains making them a promising alternative to conventional antibiotics. Soursop shows antimicrobial efficacy was evaluated using the disc diffusion method against  Streptococcus mutans ,  Streptococcus mitis ,  Porphyromonas gingivalis ,  Prevotella intermedia , and  Candida albicans in laboratory con...

PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF SOURSOP

Annona muricata L., popularly known as Laxman phal or Graviola, is widely used as a traditional medicine. Plant parts of Soursop, such as fruit, leaves, and bark, have medicinal properties. We have studied 49 research papers, which conclude that the pharmacological properties of Soursop shows Anticancer - 25%, antiulcer - 17%, antidiabetic - 14%, antiprotozoal - 10%, antidiarrhea - 8%, antibacterial - 8%, antiviral 8%, antihypertensive - 6%, wound healing properties - 4%.  The important active compounds in Annona muricata L. are Acetogenin - 49%, Alkaloids -26%, Flavonoids - 19%, and others - 6%, which are reportedly responsible for Soursop's pharmacological properties.   Acetogenins, which are active components, are temperature sensitive. Therefore, it's challenging to scale up and produce stable raw material for commercial production. Thus, developing drug preparations is difficult, despite sufficient evidence of bioactivity of Acetogenins.  To get the...
